The Durango-Mazatlán Highway sector is built in a mountainous area are therefore there is a total of 61 tunnels, adding over 18,000 linear meters, and 115 bridges, with more than 10.700m length. These tunnels and bridges join the already operating highway sections that have been built in different stages. Among the tunnels, the most important is the so called “Sinaloense Tunnel”, the longest of all, is 2,800m in length.
Helix Steel Twisted Steel Micro Rebar™ reinforcement was used in shotcrete applications across this tunnel system. The contractor was very pleased with the Helix Steel, from the workability and flow through the pipes and nozzle and found its rebound characteristics were excellent. The Helix Steel reinforced shotcrete mix was mixed via ready-mix trucks and applied using a robotic shotcrete system.
