“I came out of retirement to do this for two reasons. First, for the people at Romspen Mortgage/Liberty Ridge Homes. In my opinion, they’re the most forward-thinking firm in the Country. Second, the challenge of finding ways of turning around struggling projects and redefining how we build on difficult sites and being given the latitude to find products and methods to accomplish that mandate,” says Hooper. “Together we manage the whole construction process, from design to development. Some have a challenging financial recapture (up to a quarter-billion dollars). Others are challenging from a site topography perspective, so we need to rethink how to build a house cost-effectively on, say, the side of a mountain. That’s what brought us to the Helix Steel and Insu-Built Systems products.”
Liberty Ridge Homes is known for building some of the most energy-efficient homes in the lower mainland of British Columbia, focusing on building with the right materials to make the biggest difference.
“We’re always looking for ways to be more efficient with our time and money, and expedite the construction process through standardization across all of our sites,” explains Hooper. “Every step of the process and every product used is scrutinized.”
A very laborious and time-intensive complication of homebuilding had always been the installation of concrete reinforcement for foundations and wall assemblies. He had tried other forms of concrete reinforcement fibers, but wasn’t impressed with how inconsistent the fiber disbursement was in the mix, nor how the fibers clogged up cement pump trucks, impacting finishing results and causing countless delays and cost overruns on already challenged projects. A good concept with poor execution.
However, as luck would have it, Liberty Ridge Homes’ principal geotechnical engineer had taken classes from a professor at the University of Michigan, the same professor responsible for inventing and developing Helix Micro Rebar. He suggested that Hooper reach out to Helix Steel to discuss their one-inch twisted steel reinforcement.
So he did.
Hooper spoke with the Helix Steel team and liked what he heard.
He admits that it took a bit of work to refine the batching process with larger pours, but with the help of Helix Steel’s engineering team, he couldn’t believe the results. Combined with efficiencies of other construction processes, Liberty Ridge Homes began finishing the first floor of a three-story six-plexes in a day. The next floor could be installed the following morning. A three-storey six-plex building could now be ‘locked-up’ in as little as a month and a half, with insulation, windows, doors and siding finished.
“Today, we use the reinforcement in anything that takes concrete – in slabs, footings and walls,” says Hooper. “We’re using fewer people to get it done. We’ve eliminated a whole stage. Our cost of materials is already less 15–20%. And we get a significantly more durable product that addresses the stringent seismic code requirements of the southwest coast of British Columbia, all with virtually no waste.”
Now that Hooper has experienced the benefits of Helix Micro Rebar, he’s looking forward to replicating his discovery across North America. To do so is no small feat, but he’s up to the challenge.

That first project for Custom Concrete resulted in 90% less rebar in the footings and 98% less rebar in the slabs. Custom Concrete was pleased with the results and couldn’t wait to make it a standard material for their operations, with Harvey saying, “After we saw the time savings on that one job we were sold.”

Helix Steel’s concrete reinforcement succeeds as a leading concrete repair product in a three-year test on the Minnesota highway system.
September 15, 2021 (Ann Arbor, Michigan) – Helix Steel is proud to announce that its innovative reinforcement Helix® Micro Rebar® is one of the few concrete patch products to withstand heavy traffic, freeze-thaw and de-icing agents of Minnesota’s highway system.
The multi-year project was undertaken by the National Road Research Alliance’s (NRRA) Preventive Maintenance Team and sought to determine the most effective joint repair programs. By selecting longer-lasting patches for Minnesota’s roadways, the results will be: reduced need for lane closures, lower maintenance costs and the increased availability of staff to perform other duties.
Helix Steel performed two tests involving Helix Micro Rebar (also known as Helix 5-25) in conjunction with CTS Rapid Set DOT Repair Mix. The one-inch twisted steel reinforcement was mixed in a revolving drum mixer with the concrete mix, placed on the patch area, then finished using traditional materials. Within one hour, the road for each test was reopened to traffic. Results after one, two and three years proved that the patches would last greater than five years.
“We are thrilled with the results of the independent real-world testing of our product,” says Luke Pinkerton, President and Chief Technology Officer of Helix Steel. “Helix Micro Rebar has been tested in labs and has been used in more than 50,000 applications across North America. This project proves yet again that our American-made reinforcement works to strengthen concrete, save money and reduce maintenance.”
The project’s final report describes the methodology of the tests, summarizes each of the products used in the research project and explains details pertaining to the estimated service life, installation and curing, shelf life and packaging.
By using proven techniques to extend the lifespan of its roads, Minnesota hopes to make better use of the funds available. This is especially important since early in August 2021 the Senate passed a package that includes $110 billion for roads, bridges and other large infrastructure projects. If the bill is passed by the House in October, then this could be one of the largest infrastructure funding injections in America’s history.
Contractors will be under intense pressure to provide American taxpayers with the biggest return on their investment. They will need to use highly efficient materials that focus on long-term resilience and safety.

You already know that concrete has very high compressive strength, but low tensile strength. Unfortunately, the rebar and fibers many engineers choose to keep things together do not do their job the way it needs to be done. Helix Micro Rebar is designed with a twist, and mixed throughout every inch of concrete to receive 100% coverage consistently, greatly increasing concrete’s modulus of rupture.

Although all-steel Helix Micro Rebar is small like a fiber, that’s where the similarities end.
Plastic is 10x softer than concrete, allowing concrete to crack before tension allows it to stop cracks from growing larger. Steel is 6x stiffer than concrete, helping to resist cracks from forming.
There are also steel fibers, which are often sold as straight rods with hooks on each end, allowing the tensile strength of concrete to pull it apart before enacting their crack-stopping power.
Fiber also leaves engineers with many questions regarding product support, proper dosages, structural integrity, testing methodology, field validation techniques and efficiencies.
The International Code Council Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) has published ESR 3949 that allows engineers, architects and builders to easily implement Helix Micro Rebar in residential slabs, foundations, footings, walls and pavements. Whether your objective is to control cracks or prevent structural failure – or perhaps both – Helix Micro Rebar’s patented twisted design takes both concerns into account. For building environments that are more likely to experience either of these potential issues, a concrete reinforcement must be chosen that suits all reliability concerns.
Professional engineers in laboratory testing use impartial measurements to provide accurate data on Helix Micro Rebar’s effectiveness. Tests include peak strength, strength after a small crack develops, testing after large cracks develop, tension and bending test and much more. All must be taken into account when developing a superior concrete reinforcement.
Although plastic fibers are marketed for temperature and shrinkage crack protection, they are designed not to work until large cracks have already formed, which we feel defeats the purpose of concrete reinforcement. Fiber reinforcement is tested with a 3.5 mm crack, because that width will provide fiber the best results. Helix Micro Rebar can be tested at any crack width – and even no crack at all – because it is designed to stop cracks before they even start.
Although rebar has been a mainstay in the construction industry for generations, and is currently winning the popularity contest, upon closer inspection rebar has many faults. Helix Micro Rebar not only has the better individually coated exterior look, but it has the science to back it up.

AVR Inc. uses an innovative American-made concrete reinforcement to deliver superior concrete products for its customers in the Minneapolis metro area.
For 20 years Helix Steel has been reinventing concrete reinforcement, and it is finding success around the world. Five years ago, ready-mix supplier AVR Inc. discovered the game-changing concrete reinforcement and hasn’t looked back.
AVR Inc. had its humble beginnings in 1925, when the founders moved to Minnesota to work on a 120-acre farm. With determination and innovation, the fledgling company expanded into a gravel supplier, then a road construction company. That grew into a ready-mix company followed by many acquisitions resulting in the regional powerhouse that is AVR Inc.
Today, with more than 800 acres of aggregate pits and 100+ concrete trucks, AVR offers the ‘Twin Cities’ metro area a wide range of construction solutions, from concrete contracting to concrete pumping to read-mix concrete delivery. With innovation at its core, AVR had used fiber reinforcement in the past since it was a faster and safer alternative to rebar, but the workability of macrofibers was a constant frustration.
Time is of the essence for concrete delivery operations, and plants were spending far too much time troubleshooting the consistency of concrete with polyethylene fibers. Contractors were sick of it as well, so AVR sought out other solutions.
“We found out about Helix Micro Rebar in 2014,” said Josh Edwards, P.E., Vice President – Engineering & Aggregates for AVR. “We spoke with a member of the Minnesota Concrete Council who recommended it, so we thought we would give it a shot.”
Edwards contacted the engineers at Helix Steel to learn more about the design of the product, and to determine exactly how the one-inch twisted steel design helps it to perform better than polyethylene or even steel fibers. Helix Micro Rebar was shown to increase fatigue resistance by up to 300% and the flexural strength of concrete by up to 33%. It also has a history of successful use in a wide range of structural applications.
“In theory it was going to be better; the engineering certainly made sense,” Edwards said. “The real advantages for us ended up being the consistency and workability we gained. We needed to fight with polyethylene fiber a lot. We don’t get that with Helix Micro Rebar.”
AVR now gives contractors a more workable mix that can do everything that macro fibers do and then some.
“When you’re pouring a warehouse slab, for example, you might be pouring 200 yards in an hour,” said Edwards. “The concrete has to have a good consistency to pour quickly….Any little benefit is a big cost and time saver.”
Contractors appreciate the reduced labor costs and safety issues compared to rebar or mesh, with every 10,000 sq. ft. of rebar replaced with Helix Micro Rebar saves them approximately one full day of construction.
Using Helix Micro Rebar also allows AVR’s customers to pour concrete slabs with extended joint spacing. The standard joint spacing is roughly 14–18 feet, but can be extended to as much as 100 feet with the innovative micro reinforcement. That often results in huge savings in labor for concrete cutting alone.
In the Twin Cities metro area, fibers are well known, but Helix Micro Rebar is being used in more and more structures, from office buildings and warehouses to bridges and condominiums.
