If you’re in the construction industry to improve buildings, revolutionize processes and work smarter, it may be time to rethink your concrete reinforcement.

Sure, rebar still has a place in this world for certain applications, but for many, such as slabs, walls, roads and even precast structures, another solution is staking its place.

The concrete reinforcement you’ve been waiting for is Helix Micro Rebar™, a one-inch twisted piece of steel that gives people in the construction industry more reasons than ever to innovate.

Why Should You Care About A Better Concrete Reinforcement?

Rebar has had its day in the sun. Helix Micro Rebar can often do much of what rebar does and much more. Here are some highlights:

Stronger Concrete

Helix Micro Rebar™’s small, twisted design creates phenomenal strength in concrete. The pieces are evenly dispersed throughout the concrete to create a composite material that retains its composition better than concrete with rebar. This eliminates corrosion, reduces cracks, and can increase load capacity without rebar added.

Streamlined Concrete Placement

Unlike rebar, which requires complex placement, laborious tying and time-consuming inspections, Helix Micro Rebar™ is pre-mixed directly into the concrete, either at the batch plant or at the job site, eliminating the need for additional labor and equipment. This streamlined installation process accelerates construction timelines and reduces overall project costs.

With a simplified concrete placement process, overall project expenses are lower, making Helix Micro Rebar a better choice for developers seeking to maximize their ROI.

Reduced Environmental Impact

We all care about the environment and reducing unnecessary materials, which is yet another reason to consider Helix Micro Rebar™.

Its design creates stronger concrete yet requires less steel compared to traditional rebar, minimizing your environmental impact. Helix Micro Rebar™ also helps to extend the lifespan of your concrete structures, reducing the need for frequent repairs and replacements and ultimately conserving resources.

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) are increasingly becoming essential for modern warehousing and distribution facilities, revolutionizing how materials and products are stored and retrieved.

These systems can increase space utilization by 90%, productivity levels by 90%, accuracy to 99.9%+ levels and throughput by 750 lines per hour/per operator or more depending on the configuration of the system. 1

With countless benefits, these storage systems certainly are the way of the future, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t come with unique challenges—especially when it comes to the concrete slabs beneath them.

Concrete Slab Challenges in Facilities with ASRS

These high-rise structures are heavy and require a concrete slab that performs far better than the standard.

Challenge #1 – High Load Requirements

ASRSs need to be properly supported for the goods that they store as well as the hefty systems themselves. Traditional rebar reinforcement may struggle to meet the load capacity or require far more concrete to compensate for the difference.

Challenge #2 – Rebar Placement Issues

Thicker concrete, double rebar reinforcement, and ASRS anchor bolts often complicate the concrete process. This stage will incur added costs, but even more so when ASRS anchor bolts hit rebar—an entire installation project can come to a halt, resulting in expensive delays.

Challenge #3 – Flat Floor Requirements

With increased load at greater heights comes more need for a laser-accurate flat floor. Equipment like laser screeds need to perform at their very best to ensure the flattest surface.

By incorporating Helix Steel’s twisted reinforcement directly into the concrete mix, Helix Micro Rebar™ is able to improve the structural integrity of concrete slabs. In doing so, they are able to overcome all three of ASRS facility challenges:

Challenge #1 – High Load Requirements

Helix Micro Rebar™ improves the flexural strength and ductility of concrete, allowing it to withstand higher loads with far less rebar. Choosing this super-strong one-inch reinforcement allows ASRS buildings to support heavy loads with the durability, speed and safety you need, reducing cracking and shrinkage due to high loads.

In many applications like warehouses with ASRS, Helix Micro Rebar is combined with Infinity Slab, which has been used in projects featuring world-class businesses like Ulitum Cells, DHL and Wal-Mart.

Challenge #2 – Rebar Placement Issues

Rebar requires complex installation and inspection processes, demanding labor that is experienced and knowledgeable in these complexities. Since Helix Micro Rebar™ is added to concrete at the batch plant, and pours very similarly, your construction costs will be reduced, and rebar placement errors will be a thing of the past.

Testing of Helix Micro Rebar™ has shown that it has increased pull-out strength for ASRS anchor bolts.

Perhaps most valuably, Helix Steel’s team works alongside your rack supplier and contractor to create a design based on the rack layout and bolt locations.

Challenge #3 – Flat Floor Requirements

With practically no rebar in the way of your laser screed’s operations, you will quickly see the difference that a reinforcement upgrade can make. Your screed will be able to move faster with the same accuracy while minimizing the need for other equipment and tools.

Learn More About Concrete Slab Construction

Lake Havasu City in Northwest Arizona has faced serious issues with its asphalt roads due to the extremely high desert temperatures. Since asphalt temperatures are 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the temperature of the air, damage to roads is frequent, especially in places where vehicles are braking and turning.

High-Traffic Road Needed a Different Solution

Seeking a more durable solution for one road in particular, Lake Havasu City chose to replace straight sections of asphalt with new asphalt, while high-wear-and-tear intersections would be replaced with concrete. The goal was to improve the longevity and resilience of the city’s roads.

Lake Havasu City selected local General Contractor Pioneer Earthmoving and commercial concrete contractor Protek Construction to take on the task.

“Protek is in its 30th year and has really made a name for itself in the region,” says Dennis Hext, General  Manager for Protek. “In the past three years, we have doubled our revenue because of our team of 33 who are committed to doing high-quality work and getting it done on time.”

Focused on customer service, quality work and meeting deadlines, Protek became a Top 12 Finalist for the 2023 Contractor of the Year Awards by Equipment World/Caterpillar.

Replacing Rebar With the Alternative

Protek proposed using Helix Micro Rebar™ in the concrete for the pavement rehabilitation project, instead of rebar. Helix Micro Rebar™, a twisted concrete reinforcement technology, enhances concrete’s structural integrity and crack resistance, making it an ideal solution for applications that need to withstand significant elements.

Hext had already seen the benefits of Helix Micro Rebar™ from past projects, such as a facility’s 80,000 square-foot slab and high-strength curbs for an international transportation company, and knew that it would be a wise choice for this application as well.

Time Flies With Helix Micro Rebar

One of the biggest reasons contractors and developers choose Helix Micro Rebar™ is its ability to expedite construction schedules, which can lead to significant cost savings.

“Honestly, it’s not much cheaper to buy the product,” admits Hext. “But you will save significant money on labor costs since you don’t spend days and days on rebar installation. Plus, the job gets done faster. We poured up to 550 yards in a single day, which is very good for a project like this.”

Another reason Hext chose Helix Micro Rebar™ is that Protek owns a laser screed, which makes concrete finishing far easier than using standard finishing tools. Using Helix Micro Rebar™ provides the added benefit of even more speed since there would be no rebar to inhibit the movement of the laser screed.

Teamwork Makes the Concrete Dream Work

Doing a job faster and better is one thing, but Protek greatly values working with professionals who understand the importance of putting their all into every project.

Hext has a very positive relationship with their local ready-mix plant, Campbell Redi-Mix, which is where the Helix Micro Rebar™ is mixed into the concrete, directly in the concrete mixer. The owner understands the benefits of the tiny twisted concrete reinforcement, and often visits the Protek pour sites to ensure everything goes according to plan.

Hext’s team also has support directly from Helix Steel, the makers of Helix Micro Rebar™. He says that one of the best things about Helix Micro Rebar™ is being able to rely on Helix Steel’s engineering team.

“We can send the drawings and they send back the dosage and stamp within three to four days,” says Hext. “We can then take the engineered and stamped drawings and mix design submittals right to the customer. This adds a level of professionalism and gives the customer comfort.

Depending on the pour, specifications and project scope, Helix Steel will also have a team member onsite to assist in the preparation and placement.

In the case of the Lake Havasu City pavement project, each pour included a heavy dosage of 22-1/2 lb/yd of Helix Micro Rebar™, ensuring enhanced durability and crack resistance for decades to come. (Standard warehouse slabs can have dosages as low as 9 lb/yd.)

Smooth Roads Ahead for Arizona

Despite intentional damage shortly after placement, which was quickly fixed by Protek’s team of finishers, the concrete intersections have held up well, showcasing the concrete’s durability.

The next time you’re driving down Industrial Boulevard in Lake Havasu City, thank the Protek team and Helix Micro Rebar™ for the smooth ride.

Also, the next time you need commercial concrete professionals in Arizona, trust Protek. Their team’s commitment to quality, efficiency and timeliness, combined with Helix Micro Rebar™, has earned them a reputation as a leader in concrete contracting.

Traditional methods of placing concrete often involve trade-offs between speed and quality, leaving professionals like yourself seeking alternatives to bridge this gap.

The one small product gaining significant traction throughout North America is Helix Micro Rebar™, the only micro-reinforcement technology that allows for faster construction without sacrificing cost or structural integrity.

Helix Micro Rebar™ is a twisted steel micro-reinforcement that is added directly to the concrete and evenly dispersed through the mixture before it’s placed. When the concrete sets, the composite material has tensile strength that is significantly increased and is better able to resist cracking under stress than standard concrete reinforcement

Reduce Concrete Placement Time

Unlike traditional steel rebar, which is difficult to handle, time-consuming to install and prone to placement errors, Helix Micro Rebar™ is pre-mixed in the concrete to eliminate the need for manual placement and significantly reduce labor costs. Up to 100% of all rebar can be replaced with Helix Micro Rebar™!

Batch Plant Efficiencies Reduce Time Constraints

In addition to its twisted design advantages, American-made Helix Micro Rebar™ offers logistical benefits that reduce the length of construction timelines.

Since the reinforcement is added directly to the concrete mix at the batch plant, there is no need for on-site storage or handling of bulky rebar rods and rusty steel cages. This offsite task streamlines the construction process, minimizes material waste and reduces the risk of delays with logistics and scheduling.

Streamlined Inspection Processes Cut Reinforcement Timelines

Why wait for inspectors to manually check a complex network of rebar? Streamline the entire process with an inspection that takes a fraction of the time, involving a much simpler verification of the dosage.

Helix Steel’s engineering team also undertakes a three-way batch confirmation to ensure the very best in quality control and the elimination of placement errors. This involves matching the batch ticket to our own calculations package to our barcoded labels.

By removing complexities and triple-checking doses, you will get the exact amount you need while also saving valuable time.
