Course Description:
Navigating through building codes can sometimes be a challenge for even the seasoned professional at times. Join us in this hour course as we focus on how performance-based building codes are developed. Design professionals will learn how alternative allowances are there to help keep the door open for innovation in the marketplace. Innovation in terms of structural and another area, such as fire, where performance-based design and alternative methods are routinely used. We will also examine how that alternative process of code allowance is incorporated, while focusing on the subject of concrete reinforcement; and lastly, it is our hope that you will grasp a better understanding of the process for your next project.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify how building codes effect innovation in the space of concrete construction.
- Define and implement the code process in order to meet performance standards and show how these codes provide ways to meet the performance standards through innovation and technology. This will also include alternative allowances that are in the codes.
- Explain the purpose of ISO evaluation reports, such as ICC and IAPMO which are used to demonstrate compliance for these bodies in certifying products, processes that are not necessarily spelled out in the building codes.
- Examine applications through examples of how this process is implemented to provide value by analyzing at several different projects.

Al Juarez comes to Helix Steel with 29 years of successful sales and marketing experience. He most recently worked at Viastore SYSTEMS Inc. where he was the Solutions Sales Director in Key Accounts. As a Sales Consultant based in Grand Rapids, Mr. Juarez will be responsible for developing new business relationships, promoting Helix® Micro Rebar™ reinforcement, and ensuring overall customer satisfaction. Mr. Juarez is a skillful sales professional with extensive experience in project development and management. Juarez has an undergraduate degree in Marketing from Michigan State University and an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. In his spare time, Al enjoys spending time with his wife Shawn and two sons, hiking, biking, reading, and leading a men’s group at his church. Juarez shared, “I am grateful to be working at Helix Steel. Luke has put his heart and soul into building an incredible organization. I feel extremely fortunate to be part of the team.”
Thomas “T.J.” Lambert comes to Helix Steel from NTH Consultants as a field review engineer bringing four years of professional experience working in the civil/geotechnical and industrial engineering industry. He has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Geoscience from Michigan State University. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mr. Lambert will be working as a Junior Inside Sales Representative focusing on developing new customer accounts and relationships with customers. He will also be hosting monthly lunch and learn seminars. In his spare time, Lambert enjoys fishing, hiking, snowboarding, and traveling. Lambert stated, “I am excited to be a part of the Helix Steel sales team. I have been involved in numerous large-scale projects in the industrial noise/acoustics and geotechnical fields. I am eager to use my experience in sales and engineering in my new position.”
